Here I will cover the second part of the question: What general supplements might help improve my chances of getting pregnant?
In part 1, we talked about prenatal multivitamins, folate or folic acid and anti-oxidants, and today I am sharing part 2.
What other supplements are often recommended in order to enhance fertility?
Next in line is Vitamin DWe recommend getting your levels tested, as most of us do not get anywhere near enough sunshine to fill our body’s Vitamin D quota. Healthy levels of Vitamin D have been linked to improved outcomes in pregnancy. Normally, vitamin D is included in prenatal multivitamins, but check just in case and if you need more, I strongly recommend the Garden of Life Vitamin D3 spray.
The next supplement is my favorite: Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs). Omega’3s fatty acids are crucial for healthy regulation of hormones throughout the body, and are key to the health of your cell membranes. EFAs help ensure that follicles have all the resources they need. They help form body tissue, including tissue in eggs and in a developing fetus. Fish oil is a prime source of EFAs provides omega-3s is a wonderful anti-inflammatory supplement that is also good for baby’s brain and eye development. Unless you are eating high quality, low-mercury fish several times a week, you are likely not getting enough omega-3s for ideal preconception. For that, I recommend the Garden of Life Oceans Mom, which has great amounts of DHA and EPA essential fatty acids.
The next supplement is CoQ10. This supplement can help your body repair from free radical damage caused by our environment and gives mitochondria, the powerhouse of our cells, a rejuvenating boost. CoQ10 improves pelvic blood flow, especially to the uterus. It will enhance energy production inside developing eggs and possibly prevent chromosomal errors. The Garden of Life CoQ10 is an amazing supplement, you’ll love it!
Next, is a good probiotic. 70% of your immune system is in the digestive system, and an influx of healthy gut flora helps prevent illnesses. This is especially important if you are taking antibiotics or have had gut issues in the past. When we take proper care of our digestive system, the whole body thanks us—and this includes the reproductive organs.
The next supplement is L-arginine. It is an amino acid that helps improve blood flow to the pelvis. It has been shown to help enhance fertility in both women and men.
Next is another favorite of mine: Magnesium. While not necessary for conception, we recommend considering this supplement if stress is a factor for you. For most people, magnesium helps decrease stress and improve sleep (you can take it right before bed for maximum benefit). My favorite is the Garden of Life Whole Food Magnesium powder, which can be mixed with water instead of taking so many pills. My favorite flavor is Raspberry Lemon, you’ll love it!
